This group project was my first experience with making a set. I was the head of construction and I really enjoyed making anything that I had a chance to. I worked with a lot of the set but on this page I'm going to focus on the main things I worked on myself.
My first job was to make the electric boxes I used out of cuts of wood and MDMF boards making them hollow to cut down on weight and cost.
I used old wires and other electrical components to create the fake electric wiring. I chose to have them connect to wooden blocks as it looked aesthetically better.
The job that I did predominantly on my own was this column. The easy part was using old flat frames to construct the rectangle. After the frame was made I used plywood this time to cover it as that was what we had and it was cheaper. it didn't matter too much as in the end we were going to cover it in fake brick.
At the start we thought we were going to make the bricks out of more wood. We didn't do this as it would weigh too much and in the end would be more compacted to make as the bricks had a bevelled edge. We happened to have sheets of polystyrene that had been donated to the course and it was perfect. I used strong adhesive to attach the boards I had cut down to size and after leaving it over might to dry I was able to carve it with a bread knife. I then passed it over to the other students who then painted it which really brought out the texture I had made.
My next job was to cover the sides of the staging. This was easy as I just measured it then cut boards of plywood and attached them with a nail gun however there were immovable parts of the staging which meant I had to cut out pieces of the boards to accommodate them.after all of the siding was done i filled the holes with thinner parts of wood and then used filler over them. In the end it was a fairly simple job.
The last main job I had was to add rust to the already painted electrical box I had worked on before. I did this by using really watered down paint and a spray bottle to allow it to drip. Although I'm not the biggest fan of painting, I'm happy with what I was able to achieve.
